Laser hair removal used to come with a real warning for deeper skin tones. Modern machines have largely solved that problem — but only when the right wavelength is used and the settings are matched to your skin. Here is what actually matters.
Is it safe for Indian skin?
Yes — with the right laser. This is the one aspect where the equipment genuinely matters more than the price.
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin in the hair follicle. The complication for medium and deep skin tones is that there is also melanin in the surrounding skin, so an inappropriate wavelength or aggressive setting can burn or, more commonly, cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
- Nd:YAG — the longest wavelength in common use. It penetrates deeper and bypasses more of the surface melanin, making it the safest choice for deeper Indian skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI).
- Diode — effective and widely used, suitable for many Indian patients particularly at lighter-to-medium tones, especially with good contact cooling.
- IPL — not technically a laser. Broad-spectrum and far less selective, so it carries higher pigmentation risk on deeper skin.
How many sessions will I need?
Hair grows in cycles, and laser only affects follicles in the active growth (anagen) phase. That is the entire reason a single session cannot work — at any given moment, only a fraction of your hair is treatable.
- Visible reduction — usually noticeable after 2 to 3 sessions.
- A full course — typically 6 to 8 sessions.
- Spacing — every 4 to 6 weeks for the face, 6 to 8 weeks for the body.
- Maintenance — occasional top-ups once or twice a year for many people.
Note the honest terminology: this is hair reduction, not permanent removal. Expect a large, lasting reduction in density and thickness rather than the complete and permanent disappearance of every hair.
What it costs in Bangalore
| Area | Typical cost per session |
|---|---|
| Upper lip / chin | ₹1,000 – ₹2,500 |
| Full face | ₹1,500 – ₹7,000 |
| Underarms | ₹1,500 – ₹3,000 |
| Full body (package rates) | from ₹25,000 per session |
Package pricing across a full course is almost always better value than paying per session, but only commit to a package after a patch test has confirmed your skin responds well.
Before and after your session
Before
- Shave the area 12–24 hours before — do not wax, thread or pluck for four weeks prior, because the laser needs the follicle intact.
- Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for two weeks; tanned skin raises the risk of pigment change.
- Mention any medication (particularly isotretinoin) and any history of cold sores if treating the face.
After
- Redness and slight bumps around the follicles for a few hours is normal and expected.
- Use sunscreen daily on treated areas — this is the single biggest factor in avoiding pigmentation.
- Skip hot showers, steam, sauna and gym for 24–48 hours.
- Treated hairs will appear to grow then shed over 1–3 weeks. That is normal shedding, not regrowth.
When it may not work well
Laser targets pigment, so it works poorly on white, grey, light blonde and true red hair, which lack enough melanin. If hair growth is driven by an underlying hormonal condition such as PCOS, laser still helps but regrowth is more likely without addressing the underlying cause.
Want to know if your skin is suitable?
A consultation and patch test will confirm the right wavelength and settings for your skin tone before you commit to a package.

Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people describe a warm snapping sensation, like a rubber band flicked against the skin. Modern machines with contact cooling make it very tolerable, and numbing cream can be used for sensitive areas.
Can I get laser done while pregnant?
It is generally deferred during pregnancy. There is no strong evidence of harm, but it is standard practice to wait, particularly as pregnancy hormones change hair growth anyway.
Will the hair grow back?
Treated follicles are permanently disabled, but new follicles can become active over time due to hormones or age. Most people need occasional maintenance sessions rather than a full repeat course.
How soon can I see results?
Shedding begins one to three weeks after the first session, and most people see a clear reduction in density by the second or third session.
